The day started off like any other when Mary-Sue left for work that morning. The girls had been a bit more antagonistic towards each other but that would all work out as they grew older. Who could figure out teens anyhow and wasn’t twins supposed to have a special bond of some kind? Daniel had the day off and seemed to want to snuggle with her but there just wasn’t time with her having to leave early and all. Besides the girls were standing right there…what would they think? These thoughts flittered through her mind as she climbed into the car pool with a sigh; another day, another dollar.
Daniel stood by the window watching as the girls got on the bus and his wife got in the car. Only a couple of more hours and Kaylynn would be here. Would she go along with his plan? Would it even work? Or would they get caught? If that happened, Mary-Sue would definitely have the last say. She’d probably kick him out without a penny. And then where would he & Kaylynn be?
As the bus pulled away from in front of the house, Angela settled down in the seat and tried to block out the noise of the other kids. She glanced sideways at her twin sister Lilith who was staring straight ahead with a scowl on her face. What was her major malfunction this morning? She wondered if Lilith had seen how their mother had rejected their father. Who could have missed it? Would it have hurt her to at least give him a goodbye kiss? Poor guy….no wonder he was chasing after the maid. Was Mary-Sue the only one who didn’t know?
As she rounded the corner in the company van, Kaylynn felt a chill go through her. The Pleasant household…a well to do family who had the town thinking they were a bit more than they actually were. If she hurried through with the cleaning maybe she and Daniel would have time for a dip in the pool and then….better not go there. They had let things get out of hand once before and she could feel sparks from him every time they were near each other ever since then. It wouldn’t do to get caught with a married man. If the truth be known, she wasn’t sure who she wanted more….Daniel Pleasant or Don Lothario. Now there was a spicy pkg. too.
***********************************************************************************************************************************************
As she did the cleaning, Daniel pretended not to notice her but was waiting for the exact right moment. “Well, I’m finished with the house. Would you like to hang out?” That was the moment! “Why yes, Kaylynn, I’d love to.” “Come over here and sit down. I’d like to talk to you about something.” As they snuggled on the couch, Daniel revealed his plan. “If you were living here, we could be together all the time and we wouldn’t have to sneak around.” “What do you think?” “Well, it does make sense, I suppose,” Kaylynn slowly said, “but what about the wife?” “Won’t she object?” “You leave Mary-Sue to me” “With the renovations we did last spring, we can turn the weight room into a private bedroom and bath for you.” “Okay Daniel, you have yourself a deal.” This deal was of course sealed with a lingering kiss.
They had no sooner parted than Mary-Sue’s carpool stopped in front of the house. She came storming into the house, mad as a hornet! “I can not believe this!” “Demote me, will he?” “Well, I’ll show him! I’ll quit!!”
Daniel assumed that the “he” was Mary-Sue’s boss. Watching her as she called up the company & promptly quit her job, he wondered if this might not be a bad time to tell her about the new arrangement. Maybe he should wait awhile until she calmed down some. Kaylynn scurried around dusting furniture that was perfectly clean trying to hear the tidbits of what had happened.
Mary-Sue ran up to their bedroom with Daniel in close pursuit. Maybe if they talked it all out then he could tell her. Kaylynn wondered what would happen when the girls came home from school. How would they accept the news? Which one, if either could she hope would be on her side?
*******************************************************************************************************************************************
“Daniel, you want the maid to LIVE with us?”
“Yes honey, I thought that it would be easier.” “I mean with both of us working so hard and you know you’ll find another job soon, she would always be here to clean up and since she’s here….she may as well cook for us too, don’t you think?” “I’m thinking of you Mary-Sue”. He gazed into her eyes & tenderly kissed her. “You look so tired lately and this would give us more time to be alone together.”
“Oh! Daniel, you can say the sweetest things!” “It’s a wonderful idea!” “Let’s celebrate…right now!”
As Daniel lay in Mary-Sue’s arms in the aftermath of love, his mind wondered downstairs to where he could hear his two daughters arguing about who knows what and Kaylynn trying to calm them down. That would be totally useless. Once they got started it was an all night brawl. He hurried and dressed trying not to wake Mary-Sue who had dozed off. Let her enjoy a few minutes rest before supper. As he headed downstairs to tell Kaylynn the good news both girls were headed up the stairs to start their homework.
“Look Lilith!” “I can’t help you with your project…I’ve got to hurry and finish my homework so that I can be ready when Dustin picks me up after supper. You’re on your own kid!”
“But Angela, you promised!” “Oh never mind!” “I’ll get Mom to help me later.”
Kaylynn stepped out of the kitchen, face flushed from opening the oven. Daniel hurried over and took her into his arms. “It’s all set.” “She agreed, thinking that I was doing something noble for her.” Kaylynn almost squealed with delight! Instead she planted a huge smooch right on Daniel’s waiting mouth. They hugged for a few seconds and broke apart as they heard someone coming down the stairs. Daniel went outside to get his fitness equipment arranged on the back patio while Kaylynn went back in to check on dinner.
As Mary-Sue walked slowly down the stairs, she thought about the proposal that Daniel had made earlier to her. She had already talked it over with the girls and they had thought she had a great plan. Kaylynn the live-in maid….Yes, this definitely had possibilities.
There was Daniel going about his business, getting his fitness equipment all arranged. Kind of like the cat that swallowed the canary….hmm, if he only knew. And look at sweet Kaylynn….playing her part so well. Going through the pretenses of being a maid when all she was really after was Mary-Sue’s husband! Well, she would pay! They would both pay!! Did they think she was ignorant? That she didn’t know what they were doing behind her back? Well, she’d show them! She smiled as she went into the bathroom and flushed the birth control pills down the toilet. She’d thought about this for several weeks now. The pills should be almost out of her system by now. No sense in keeping them. It was time to step up her plan for Mr. Daniel Pleasant!
***************************************************************************************************************************************
Two months later…
“Oh Kaylynn, do you think you could iron this dress for me?” “Dustin will be picking me up soon and my heart is really set on wearing it.” “Yes ma’am, Miss Angela, I’ll iron it as soon as I scrub this toilet.” AGAIN, thought Kaylynn. It seemed she no sooner cleaned one toilet than Mary Sue was going to another one and throwing up. When had she and Daniel decided to have another baby? Daniel swore he thought she was on the pill but obviously they didn’t work because she was definitely pregnant! Ever since she got pregnant, she had been the biggest slave driver…. “Kaylynn, do this”, “Kaylynn, do that”, “Kaylynn we need you to fix this or that.” And she hadn’t had a second alone with Daniel. It was almost as if either Mary Sue or one of the girls were hanging on him every minute he was home and when he was gone, they were constantly keeping her busy. It was maddening! Like just as she set up the ironing board to iron Angela’s stupid dress, Lilith screeched, “Kaylynn, Oh Kaylynn, where are you?” “I need some cookies baked for my after school club tomorrow.” “I promised that I’d bring some but I just don’t have time because I’ve got a date with Antonio Lopez.” “Be a dear and bake up a batch of 2-3 dozen for me tonight, okay?” “Thanks Kaylynn, you’re such a dear to do this for me!”
As she was in the middle of baking the cookies, Mary Sue spoke over the intercom, “Kaylynn, could you please bring me soda crackers & something to drink?” “I’m feeling so nauseas. “Oh, and the toilet up here needs scrubbing.” “I hate to be such a bother….”
“Yeah right you do”, thought Kaylynn. She was beginning to wonder if the whole family wasn’t out to get her. There were times when she even wondered if Daniel was in on it. He wasn’t even paying any attention to her anymore. He was always just catering to Mary Sue’s every whim and boy, did she have a lot! Kaylynn hadn’t even been able to sneak away to see Don except for one time. And that had gone real bad. They ended their relationship. He informed her that he really did love Cassandra and was planning on marrying her as soon as he got a little farther along in the medical field. Her mother had come home and the Goth family had hit the society pages of the newspaper big time. And of course with Mary Sue being best friends with Cassandra, Daniel and her had been right there in the middle of everything.
Kaylynn had so been hoping that by this time Daniel would have asked Mary Sue for a divorce but he said with her pregnant, it just didn’t seem right. “Well, what about me?” “When do I get my day in the society pages of the newspaper?” Kaylynn thought as she trudged upstairs with a tray.
As she bent over the toilet and started scrubbing, she could hear the girls coming home from their dates. They came running up the stairs laughing and tossing their sweaters on the floor. Their reasoning was that Kaylynn would pick them up later. “Mom’s plan is working great, hmm Lilith?” “It sure is Angela.” “Maybe I should kick my shoes off in here and that way she’d have to carry them back to my room to put them away.” “Oh yes!” “And I’ll kick mine off in the middle of your floor!” “This is great!” Mary Sue thought the girls were being a bit childish with their ways of keeping Kaylynn busy but every little scene was another nail in the coffin of Daniel and Kaylynn’s relationship. She had heard from Cassandra that the playboy Don Lothario had mended his ways and they planned to be wed by the end of the month. It seemed that Kaylynn lost out on that relationship too. These women needed to learn that just because you’re pretty; it doesn’t give you a license to break up families! And before she was through with Kaylynn Langerak, she’d learn that lesson well! Who knows? She might even change her ways and become a respectable woman of society…time would only tell.
***********************************************************************************************************************************
Kaylynn hurried through with the housecleaning with one eye on the clock. If she wanted to get to the store before everyone started coming in for the day, she’d have to hurry. Mary Sue had finally gotten over the morning sickness and was starting to show her pregnancy. To celebrate, she had decided to take Cassandra Lothario out for lunch. Why did a part of Kaylynn just feel so sad when she remembered the past with Don & Daniel? She had all but given up on ever being with Daniel now. He had eyes for no one but Mary Sue these days, she sighed. Kaylynn got in the taxi with her shopping list & leaned back wondering if she’d ever have a home of her own. Why even the Caliente sisters had found husbands. And that was without breaking up any marriages! If they could do it, couldn’t she? Kaylynn sighed again as she walked up to the shop & started putting stuff into her basket. Milk, cereal, eggs…the list went on & on. As she was reaching for the lettuce, her hand bumped into another hand. “Oh! I’m sorry”, she exclaimed as the lettuce went tumbling down the isle. “No!” “It was completely my fault!” Kaylynn looked up into the bluest eyes she thought she had ever seen. “Please forgive me for not watching where I was going”, he said with a smile. “By the way, my name is Paul; this is just my second day in Pleasantview.” “I’m Kaylynn.” “Welcome to our little town,” Kaylynn smiled back. “Say, would you like to grab a cup of coffee with me?” “Yes, I’d love that,” Kaylynn replied.
As they sat down at the table with their coffee, Paul was gazing at Kaylynn’s uniform. “You are a maid?” he asked. “Yes.” Kaylynn informed him that she was a live-in maid for a family by the name of Pleasant. What she left out is that she was also the cook, seamstress, & soon to be head bottle washer & nanny. They talked for what seemed like just a few minutes but when Kaylynn looked down at her watch, it was almost time for Daniel to get home. Mary Sue & the girls were probably already home & wondering where she was. She jumped up, apologizing to Paul but explaining to him that she must hurry & get home. He asked if he might have her phone number to call her sometime. Kaylynn gave it most willingly.
*********************************************************************************************************************************************
As Mary Sue was sitting with Cassandra having lunch, they caught up on each other’s lives. “Oh Mary Sue, pregnancy really looks good on you.” “You are so pink & alive looking.” Mary Sue laughed at her choice of words. “If you could have seen me last month, I think you would have said just the opposite.”
“So how are you enjoying married life?” “Well, it’s taking some getting used to.” “I changed my job to the Education field & it’s coming along.” “With Don working the exact opposite schedule of mine, we miss out on our time together a lot.” “I know what you mean,” Mary Sue replied. “I was having to get up so early to be at the school & Daniel wasn’t having to leave until later but now with me on maternity leave, I’m around the house all the time & I’m enjoying it ever so much!”
“How’s the live-in maid working out for you?” Cassandra shyly asked. Mary Sue chuckled as she thought for a moment before replying. “Well, to be totally honest, we’ve just about worked her to death.” “Believe it or not, Daniel has lost interest in her & the sneaking out late at night has stopped.” “A couple of times of almost getting caught put a cure to that.” “Well, I raise my hat to you dear lady…you’re much braver than I would have been.” “I was just glad when the Caliente sisters finally got married & stopped their glaring at Don & me.” Cassandra hesitantly continued, “Now, if Kaylynn Langerak would find someone, why life would be almost perfect!” “That it would, dear friend, that it would”, Mary Sue agreed as she rose to pay the bill & head home.
****************************************************************************************************************************************
As Kaylynn rushed around the kitchen getting supper on that evening, her thoughts kept going back to the coffee shop & the time she spent with Paul Trent. What a nice man he was…and sooooo handsome! Black hair with big blue eyes….nice! She served the family and instead of eating her own dinner in the kitchen while they ate in the dining room, Kaylynn went to her room & sat in her chair to daydream of Paul.
Suddenly, the phone rang. She grabbed the phone off the wall right outside her door. “Pleasant residence, may I help you?” “Hello. Is Kaylynn there?” “This is she.” “Hi Kaylynn, this is Paul…from the coffee shop?” “Oh, hi Paul!” “Say Kaylynn, I know we just met & all but would you be interested in going out to dinner with me this evening?” Kaylynn felt her heart jump in her chest…”Yes, I’d love to go out to dinner with you.” “I’ve got to clean up the kitchen but I get off after that.” “Well, how about if I pick you up, say around 7:00?” “That would be great, I’ll be ready.” “Okay, bye-bye.”
Kaylynn hurried through cleaning up the dishes & took a quick shower & changed out of her uniform. As she walked down the walk to Paul’s car she felt happier than she had in months.
Mary Sue looked out the upstairs window & watched them drive away. Well, well, that would be something to tell Cassandra. Mary Sue just hoped this wasn’t some other woman’s husband that Kaylynn had latched onto. With Kaylynn gone for the evening, she relaxed & enjoyed her family. Daniel kept flirting with her and she returned the flirting right back. The girls jokingly made gagging noises ever time they kissed. Finally, Angela laughed & told them both to go get a room. Daniel grabbed Mary Sue’s hand & said, “That sounds like a good idea!” “Come on sweetheart, let’s go find a room!” They ran upstairs together.
“How are things going with Antonio, Lilith?” “We started going steady last week,” Lilith smiled. “Well, congratulations” Angela said, patting her sister on the shoulder. She knew that Lilith had a hard time after she heard the rumors about Dirk & Virginia Wade. Finally, one day after school, she had walked over to his house & there they were making out on the front porch. She immediately broke up with him. A few weeks later she had met Antonio. “I hate to leave you down here by yourself but I’ve got about 5 more Math problems that I’ve got to finish before tomorrow so I’m heading on up to my room.” “Yeah, I’m going up too. I’m going to get my shower & then hit the sack early.” They parted at the top of the stairs. Angela’s room was to the right where Lilith’s was to the left. They could hear giggling coming from Daniel & Mary Sue’s room. They both rolled their eyes & made gagging noises!
Kaylynn & Paul pulled up in front of the restaurant. She was so happy to be going out again. She had been cooped up in the Pleasant house for far too long. As they were seated, Kaylynn looked around. This was a very upscale place. Paul ordered champagne for them. It would seem someone had money, Kaylynn thought to herself. Good looking, nice to talk to & money too. Had she finally hit the jackpot? “So, tell me about yourself Paul,” Kaylynn leaned in closer with interest. “Well, I’m new in town like I told you this afternoon.” “I’m in the Architecture business.” “Hopefully, one day I’ll make it to city planner but right now I’m just a cement mixer,” Paul laughed. “Have you always wanted to clean houses, Kaylynn?” “Well, ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved cleaning.” “But here lately, I’m kind of wishing for my own place to live again.” “Oh look!” “Here comes our food!” The waiter was coming towards their table with a large tray held high above his head. As he placed the plates of lobster down in front of them, Kaylynn sighed. Now this is the life, she thought. After an evening of dining, dancing, & great conversation, Paul took Kaylynn home. As he kissed her goodnight at the door, he promised to call soon. Kaylynn got ready for bed but couldn’t fall to sleep. She kept reliving the evening she had spent with Paul. Maybe she should see about finding her own place to live & quit being a maid. Would Daniel & Mary Sue understand? Well, if they needed a maid all that bad, they could always call the company for another one. She wasn’t the only maid in the city! As she dozed off, she dreamed of having her own house and her & Paul living there happily having lots of babies.
*************************************************************************************************************************************************
Several months later…
Mary Sue grabbed her stomach as another contraction hit. “Daniel!” “Get in here….the babies are coming!” Daniel came running trying to catch his breath. The doctor had told them a couple of months ago that it was definitely twins again & that they could come at anytime. Mary Sue handed the first one to Daniel just in time to have another contraction. Daniel gazed down at his son & felt so happy. A son, his son…he wondered if Mary Sue would care if they named him after Daniel. “It’s another boy”, Mary Sue said with a smile. What a handsome pair! “Have you thought of names, Mary Sue?” Mary Sue thought for a moment, “What about Danny & Manny?” “Firstborn son after his father & Manny because I just like the name & it rhymes with Danny.” “Perfect,” said Daniel. “I love it!”
They fed the little ones & put them into their cribs in the nursery right off of their bedroom. The girls would sure be surprised when they got home.
Mary Sue lay down to rest for awhile. She thought back over the last few months. Kaylynn had moved out a few weeks after meeting Paul. She bought the house next door to the Burb family across the street. Not more than a month after she had gotten settled in her new house, she & Paul got married. Mary Sue gave a little sigh & thought to herself, “Yes, Kaylynn finally turned out okay.” She could safely say that Kaylynn Langerak was now a respectable woman of society.
~The End~
Daniel stood by the window watching as the girls got on the bus and his wife got in the car. Only a couple of more hours and Kaylynn would be here. Would she go along with his plan? Would it even work? Or would they get caught? If that happened, Mary-Sue would definitely have the last say. She’d probably kick him out without a penny. And then where would he & Kaylynn be?
