Dina was sunbathing up on the roof of her condo when she heard her sister, Nina yelling up for her. “Hey Dina, Come on down, there’s somebody here that I want you to meet.” Dina got up slowly. She had no desire to meet any of Nina’s friends. She was still trying to get over the double shock of losing not one but two of her lovers! Mortimer’s long lost wife showed up suddenly after having been gone for years and Don had decided that he really loved Cassandra and had become the true blue fiancée. Dina thought she would throw up. What a time for all of this to happen. If things continued like this, why she’d have to get a job! Nina had been hinting about moving out for weeks now. As she walked down the stairs to meet Nina’s friend, she tried to think of ways to make money fast without having to actually get a 9-5.
“Dina, I’d like you to meet Mark Lawson.” “Mark, this is my sister Dina.” Mark was a tall good looking guy with red hair and big blue eyes. “Now they would make a really cute couple,” she thought. She almost laughed at the thought of her little red-headed nephews and nieces running around. From the look on Nina’s face, Dina thought that her sister was having thoughts along the exact same line.
Mark works for that new company that just started up in the downtown district. He’s an Executive Assistant. “It’s real nice to meet you Mark”, Dina said smiling. “Likewise”, said Mark. He sat on the couch watching Football while Nina ran upstairs to get ready for their date.
“Where did you snag him?” “Come on sis, tell all”, urged Dina. “I was at the bowling alley last night trying to forget how a certain low life, which shall remain nameless, has dumped me for money!” “I’m telling you…he’ll get out of signing that pre-nuptial agreement!” “All of a sudden I looked up and Mark was walking in the door.” “Every female in the room turned their head as he walked by.” “I wasted no time in getting over there and introducing myself and we seem to hit it right off.” “We’re going to the movies tonight and dancing tomorrow night.”
“Well, good for you sis, have fun with Mark.” “And don’t worry about Don, he’ll be back.” “A tiger doesn’t change its stripes or is that a leopard and spots?” “Whatever, you know what I mean.” “To think he was stringing at least four women, probably more, along.” It serves him right to get caught in the net of marriage.
It still burned Dina that one of those women was her own sister Nina. But she kept that to herself. She was having her own hard time getting over the fact that she lost out on the big money bags, Mr. Mortimer Goth. She had been so close to getting him to wed her and it was all undone in one night. Why did his wife have to come back? Now she was pregnant with his child. That should be her, Dina, pregnant with a Mortimer Goth’s child! But no, she was still trying to latch onto a rich man. It seemed as if they were disappearing rather fast, too.
Nina waved good-bye as her and Mark drove off in his sports car. Well, it looked like at least one of the Caliente sisters would be having a good time tonight. Dina went inside to drown her sorrows in a bowl of chocolate ice cream. After the bowl of ice cream, Dina was still feeling bad so she decided to drown her sorrows literally and headed downtown to the local night club.
The place was hopping as she made her way to the bar. People were dancing on the floor and the noise was deafening! But anything was better than sitting at home alone feeling sorry for herself. As Dina was slowly drinking her drink the bartender placed another one in front of her. “This is compliments of the guy at the end of the bar,” he said motioning with his head. Dina stretched her neck to see but there were too many people so she couldn’t see who had bought her the drink. “Tell him thank you,” Dina yelled above the crowd. The bartender nodded and headed toward the other end of the bar.
As Dina finished her first drink and started her second, a tall blonde tapped her on the shoulder. “Would you like to dance?” “Yes, I’d love to,” Dina said. They made their way through the crowd to the dance floor. As they danced to the music, Dina checked out the guy in front of her. White pants, blue shirt, open half way down. He had a very muscular chest. This was one handsome hunk! The music changed to a slow dance and he pulled her into his arms. “My name’s James….James Miller.” I’m Dina Caliente….nice to meet you!” “You wouldn’t by any chance be the guy that bought me a drink just now, would you?” “That would be me at your service,” he smiled. “Oh! And what a smile it was!” Dina thought to herself. The song ended and they made their way back to the bar. James ordered them a couple of more drinks and told Dina, “Let’s find us a table away from all of this noise so we can talk.” “Great idea”, replied Dina.
They walked through the crowd until they were on the other side of the dance floor where the tables were. Way in the back away from most of the crowd they both spied an empty table and made a dash for it. As they settled down in their seats, Dina felt like pinching herself to make sure this was really happening. “So, what do you do for a living, James?” “I’m in the music business.” “Currently I’m only a record sales clerk but I’m studying hard to move up the ladder.” “I want to have my own Rock band one day.” “Wow!” “How exciting,” Dina drooled. To herself she thought, “Ka-ching!” He was going to be a rich man. And everyone knew that handsome rich men needed beautiful rich women by their side. She was just the woman for the job! They talked to the wee hours of the morning and finally James said he needed to leave. They caught a cab and he dropped Dina off at her house. As he told the cabbie to wait a minute, he walked Dina to the door and kissed her goodnight. As their lips met, she could have sworn she saw hearts….or maybe they were dollar signs but either way, Dina Caliente was in love! He promised to call her the next day. Then he was gone.
As she went up the stairs she saw the light was still on under Nina’s door. She tapped lightly and Nina opened the door. “Where have you been until right before daybreak?” “And who was that hunk who brought you home?” Dina spent the rest of the time until the sun came up filling her sister in on her meeting with James. Then Nina had to tell her all about her date with Mark. As both sisters finally went to bed, they dreamed of nice lives and white picket fences. Could their dreams be coming true?

The next few weeks flew by in a blur. Nina and Mark were going out every day or night and James was over so much that it seemed like he had moved in. Nina came running in one day all excited! “Dina, guess what? “Um, Mark asked you to marry him.” “No silly, even though that would be great and I would say yes but no, that’s not what I’m so excited about.” “Do you know that house that they built right across the street?” “Do you mean the real big one that we both said some rich couple would move into? Yes, yes, that’s the one!” Nina was shaking her head up and down so fast it almost looked like a bobbin head. “MARK BOUGHT IT!!!!!” “Wow, are you serious?” Dina was very impressed. “Yes!” “They said he can start moving in tomorrow and get this, he wants me to go help him furnish it.”
Well, that’s exciting! He’s going to be living right across the street. Congrats! Hey! I have some news of my own. I’m thinking about asking James to move in here. “What do you think?” “I think it’s great, sis. “You guys make a real cute couple.” “I think so too and he’s practically living here now so why not?” “I’m going to ask him tonight.”

Next month…
James had moved in and asked Dina to marry him. They had decided since her condo was paid for that they would just live there when they were married.
Mark and Nina had been furnishing his new house across the street. One night as they were locking up the house, Mark dropped down on one knee and asked Nina to be his wife. She agreed and threw herself in his arms with happiness!
“You know Dina, I haven’t thought of ole ‘what’s his name’ in months.” “Neither have I”, said Dina. “It’s amazing what true love can do for you.” “I hear you sis.” “Say, what do you think about a double wedding?” “I think it’s a great idea but let’s ask the guys.” The men agreed and a double wedding was set for the next month.
A year later…
Nina looked out her upstairs window and saw the Lotharios carrying groceries into their house. It’s hard to believe that just a little over a year ago, she was so smitten with Don. She had such horrible feelings towards Cassandra. Now she had to admit that they were a happy couple. And she was truly happy for them.
She glanced at the condo next door to the Lotharios, her sister and brother-in-laws house. Now there too was a miracle. Dina had been so determined to marry a rich man just for his money. She had almost succeeded with Mortimer Goth, too. Thankfully she met James when she did. There’s no telling what kind of damage she would have done.
Nina slowly rubbed her tummy and felt the little one inside kick back at her. A few more months and Dina’s red-headed niece or nephew would make their appearance. They had joked about that so often and now it looked like it was going to happen. But the funny part of it all was it looked like they would all be giving birth within a few weeks of each other. As if on cue Dina walked out of her house to check the mail and looked over at Nina’s house. She waved to her sister and stuck out her tongue. Well, some things never change, Nina thought as she laughed. Dina would always be a brat. ~The End~
